With bowlers like Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, Pakistan boast a formidable fast bowling attack. Now this country’s cricket union has approached Morné Morkel to assist his bowlers.
According to Cricinfo, Pakistan’s cricket bosses are ready to appoint Morkel as the country’s new bowling coach and he will become part of the coaching set-up after this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
Morkel is at the helm of the Lucknow Super Giants’ bowlers in the IPL.
The 38-year-old former Protea player is preparing a good coaching testimonial. He was part of Namibia’s setup during the previous T20 World Cup tournament in Australia, while he also assisted Durban’s Super Giants’ bowlers in the SA20 tournament.
New Zealand’s Silver Ferns also approached him for the recent World Cup spectacle in South Africa.
Morkel particularly impressed in his international playing days with the bounce he could achieve from any pitch and he ended up taking 309 Test wickets.
In particular, he formed a formidable bowling partnership with Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander and together they took the South Africans’ red-ball cricket team to greater heights.
Besides Morkel, Pakistan also approached Andrew Puttick to become its batting coach.
The 42-year-old Puttick was one of the Cape Cobras’ big stars and he scored almost 11,000 first-class runs in his 194 matches.
He has only one white ball cricket match for South Africa [teen Nieu-Seeland in 2005] played, but since putting his bat away, he has gained coaching experience with the Protea women’s cricket team and the SA A team.
