Daniil Medvedev qualified for another quarter-final when he beat Quentin Halys in the fourth round of the Miami Open with 6-4 and 6-2.
Despite rain that threatened to put the match on hold, the Moscow native put his opponent under pressure with a keen serve to win a bunch of points that way.
However, he didn’t hit the winning shot until after midnight.
“I was under the impression that the officials would call off the game. I am quite satisfied with my game because it was not easy at all to play tennis in these conditions. I guess Quentin wasn’t firing on all cylinders either; especially because we played so late,” said the Russian star.
Medvedev has only lost three matches this year, while earlier he also won three titles in a row.
He will play USA’s Christopher Eubanks in one of the quarter-finals later today.
Then Jannik Sinner also secured his place in the quarter-finals when he settled with Emil Ruusuvuori.
The final score was 6-3 and 6-1 in the Italian’s favor and he will face Carlos Alcaraz or Taylor Fritz in the playoff.
