A Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms from Thursday afternoon to Friday evening has been issued for Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
The South African Weather Service said heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds could lead to flooding of roads, low-lying areas and bridges across the central and eastern parts of the North West, northeastern parts of the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga Highveld and southwestern parts of Limpopo.
William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Municipality, says the city’s disaster and emergency services have been put on high alert for any incidents of flooding and other life-threatening emergencies.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant. “Informal settlements, formal structures on the flood line, and low-lying areas and bridges can be affected by this. The road surface can be dangerous and poor visibility can cause motorists to miss puddles of water or potholes,” he said.
In an emergency, Ekurhuleni’s emergency service center can be contacted on 011 458 0911 or 10177.
