The Falcons’ investigation team for serious corruption carried out simultaneous search and seizure operations on Wednesday morning at a house in Bedfordview and offices in Germiston and Edenvale respectively.
The operations form part of the ongoing investigation what the whistleblower Babita Deokaran cost her life.
On Wednesday, the Hawks seized several electronic devices and documentary evidence for further investigation. No one has been arrested at this stage. The operation is a follow-up to the one that was carried out in December last year on the Tembisa hospital’s premises.
Deokaran was the Department of Health’s acting CFO when she was shot dead outside her home in the south of Johannesburg on 23 August 2021 after dropping her daughter off at school.
“The alleged tender fraud at the Tembisa hospital led to approximately one billion rand being stolen from the Gauteng Department of Health,” says Capt. Lloyd Ramovha, police spokesperson for the Hawks in Gauteng.
According to a report issued in December last year by the Special Investigation Unit (SUE), fraudulent payments of R850 million were made to 227 companies through irregular contracts.
At the time of her murder, Deokaran had already drawn up profiles of 224 of the companies and contained them in a forensic report of her own.
According to the report, the companies belong to four businessmen, including Stefan Govindraju, who has been identified as the main beneficiary of the irregular procurement practices at Tembisa Hospital.
“These individuals and entities are now part of an ongoing investigation into various allegations related to fraud at the hospital,” says Ramovha.
