Amid allegations that Eskom operates its power plants to breaking point to limit load shedding phases, the power supplier announced increased load shedding on Wednesday.
Phase 2 will kick off at 4pm on Wednesday and last until 5am on Thursday.
After this, phase 3 load shedding will apply from 05:00 to 16:00, followed by phase 4 until Friday at 05:00.
Phase 3 load shedding applies Friday from 05:00 until Saturday at 05:00, after which there will be a switch to phase 2. This will apply until Sunday at 05:00.
Daphne Mokwena, acting spokesperson for Eskom, says unplanned maintenance work has led to a loss of 15,089 MW, while a further 7,147 MW cannot be used due to planned maintenance work.
“Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit at the Duvha power plant has been brought back online. At the same time, a unit each at Lethabo, Kendal and Kriel was taken off line for repair work. The delays in bringing one unit each at Hendrina and Medupi and two units at Tutuka online contributed to the capacity constraints,” says Mokwena.
Five open-cycle gas turbines at the Ankerlig power plant were also taken out of service this morning for scheduled overhauls to the control system.
