Eskom announced on Wednesday that one of its employees was “violently kidnapped by several attackers” earlier this month.
The power supplier says in a short statement that about two weeks ago, suspects apparently fired several shots at one of its employees’ cars before kidnapping the person.
The employee was later released south of Johannesburg, but further details about the circumstances of the release are not known.
According to Eskom, the employee in question was immediately admitted to a hospital after he was apparently assaulted several times by the alleged kidnappers.
Rhewal has made inquiries with the police, but is still waiting for feedback in this regard.
It is understood that the case has indeed been handed over to the relevant law enforcement authorities, who are investigating it further.
It is unknown whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the incident and what the suspects’ motive was for the kidnapping.
Calib Cassim, interim CEO of Eskom, has meanwhile strongly condemned the incident.
“Eskom condemns these cruel acts and will under no circumstances tolerate any attacks on its staff and families,” he says.
“We sympathize with what the employee went through and provide the necessary support to those involved.”
