Singer and songwriter David Kramer was honored at the 58th Fleur du Cap Awards event on March 26 for his lifetime contribution to the local and international arts and entertainment industry.
Peter Cazalet, a South African ballet dancer and set and costume designer, also received a lifetime achievement award at the event.
Fleur du Cap honored David for his contribution as a nationally and internationally renowned artist, singer, songwriter, guitarist, creator and producer of iconic musical theater productions. He is also praised for his work as an archivist of South African music and stories.
The Fleur du Cap theater prizes were awarded in 21 categories and 71 productions were eligible.
Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck and Marinda Engelbrecht’s production, Flea and the Secret/Kipper and the Secretwon the prize for best theater production for children and young people.
Karatara ‘s Gideon Lombard walked away with the laurels in two categories: for best lighting design and best sound design, original music or live performance. Earlier this year he was also with the Fiesta Prize for Best Theater Design for Karatara awarded
According to the judges, 2022 produced high-quality cinema. “The 71 productions that were eligible demonstrated once again the resilience of South African theater makers.”

The judges were Africa Melane (chairman), Hadley Tituss, Mariana Malan, Marina Griebenow, Tracey Saunders, and drs. Beverley Brommert, Lwando Scott and Wayne Muller.
It is especially productions presented in Cape Town and the surrounding areas that have received high praise. “These shows were often riveting, often daring, sometimes breathtaking and, when needed most, very funny. At the same time, it evoked a variety of complex emotions in audiences.”
The Fleur du Cap theater prizes were awarded during a glittering event at the Oude Libertas amphitheater in Stellenbosch.
