The Hyundai Atos is being discontinued in South Africa owing to the model no longer being produced at the automaker’s factory in India.

With less than 500 units left in stock the affordable hatchback will soon disappear from local dealerships, leaving the big i10 as the entry-level vehicle in the Hyundai catalogue.

The Atos had a local starting price of R199,900making it one of the cheapest cars in the whole country, and was only available in a single trim level with a choice of either a five-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

Its 1.1-litre engine provided 50kW and 99Nm, and fuel consumption worked out to around 5.8l/100km on an average cycle.

Standard kit on the small car then comprised 14-inch wheels, manual air conditioning, USB ports, Bluetooth, electric front windows, a multifunction steering wheel, cloth and vinyl upholstery, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Affordable hatchbacks

There are unfortunately not a lot of cars left in the affordable realm of R200,000 as other brands have also been pulling their cheapest units off the showroom floor.

Besides the Atos, the most recent model to be put on the chopping block is the Toyota Agyawhich is being replaced this year by the Vitz – a Suzuki Celerio lookalike.

These are the hatchbacks still on the local market that are retailing for a similar price to the outgoing Hyundai Atos.
