A former transit guard was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court on Friday for an armed transit robbery that took place on 28 October 2019.
At the time, Tebogo Abraham Leotlela (49) was part of a group of armed robbers who ambushed Fidelity guards at the Batho Plaza in Soshanguve after they refilled an ATM at Capitec bank.
Follow-up investigations led to Leotlela’s arrest on 30 October 2019 and he has been in custody since then. According to Capt. Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for the Hawks, tried several times to have Leotlela released on bail, but it was opposed each time.
Two more men, Jan Mafolo (32) and Paul Patrick Sekhalelo (42), both former Fidelity guards, were also arrested at the time and sentenced respectively in February and March this year. They received sentences of ten and 39 years respectively after pleading guilty.
The provincial head of the Hawks in Gauteng, maj-gen. Ebrahim Kadwa, praised the investigation team for their work.
“Dealing with transit robberies remains one of our top priorities in the province. We are constantly intensifying our efforts to curb these crimes,” he said.
