Three people have died and one is still missing after heavy rain fell in the Eastern Cape since Thursday. No less than ten bridges have also been built in Port St. Johns were washed away and other roads and buildings were damaged.
The OR Tambo District Municipality said on Saturday that the bodies of two of the three people who went missing on Friday have since been found. Police divers are still looking for the third person. Another person died after slipping on the rocks at Coffee Bay and falling into the sea while fishing. According to the Dispatch Live the man is a 25-year-old German tourist.
According to the municipality, the flooding caused a path of destruction and damaged homes, businesses and infrastructure. Bridges in Port St. Johns washed away made it difficult for members of the community to get to schools and other facilities.
Rhewal has Friday report thousands of people had to evacuate their homes and businesses and numerous roads and houses are under water.
Eskom also said on Friday evening that some areas in the Eastern Cape are still without power after storms obstructed the power supply to the area. Technicians are working non-stop to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has predicted more rain for Saturday and Sunday in the Eastern Cape.
