Two police officers from the Western Cape will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday for the death of two alleged car thieves. This comes after a shooting broke out last year between the police and the occupants of a suspected stolen vehicle.
The two police officers were arrested on Thursday by the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Opod). They are employed at the Kleinvlei and Mfuleni police stations respectively.
According to Lizzy Suping, Opod spokesperson, it is claimed that the police officers were chasing a stolen vehicle in April last year, when a shooting broke out between the occupants and the police. The occupants were shot dead in the process. They were apparently the first to fire shots at the police, after which the police fired back. The occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
Post-mortem examinations confirmed that the victims died of gunshot wounds.
