The next-generation Ford Ranger in single and super cab guise has officially hit South African showrooms, after being available as a double cab only since December.

The single cab line-up is offered in four specifications starting at R464,200while the roomier super cab has six variations to choose from starting at R485,400.

Additionally, the Wildtrak trim can now be had in super cab style for the first time.

Features

Both single and super cab Ranger XLs feature 16-inch Sparkle Silver alloy wheels, black rear bumpers, cloth seats, a 10.1-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-inch digital driver’s display, rollover mitigation, adaptive load control, trailer sway control, and hill-launch assist – with the 4×4 options also getting hill-descent control.

For these entry-level models, Ford also offers five Upgrade Packs providing cosmetic and functional enhancements such as chrome finishes, dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera with parking sensors, cruise control, and 17-inch rims with either all-terrain or all-season tyres.

An off-road pack is available, too, bringing steel underbody protection for the front, engine, and transfer case, a plastic fuel tank guard, and 17-inch alloy wheels shod with all-terrain tyres.

Stepping up one level, the XLT variants get C-clamp LED headlamps with daytime running lights, a chrome bar running through the grille, side steps, a tow bar, a spray-in bedliner with a 12V power socket, and a body-coloured rear bumper, mirrors, and door handles.

Inside, these bakkies provide “premium” cloth seats, a leather gearshift, smart keyless entry and push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, all-round parking sensors, and cruise control.

One of six upgrade packs can also be equipped to the XLT, encompassing fittings like a black grille, mirrors, and door handles, a black sports bar, painted accent colours for the bumpers and fog lamp bezels, 17 and 18-inch Sports wheels, and an off-road underbody protection kit packaged with all-terrain tyres.

Interior enhancements comprise dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad, embedded navigation, partial leather seats, auxiliary accessory switches in the roof, a collision mitigation system, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam activation.

The halo Wildtrak sees an exclusive exterior design sporting a unique mesh grille, mirrors, and bumpers in Boulder Grey, along with front fog lights, roof rails, a rear sports hoop, aluminum load box rails, and 18-inch wheels with all-season or all-terrain tyres.

Luxuries throughout the cabin come in the form of power-adjustable front seats with partial-leather trim, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, “premium” floor mats, overhead auxiliary switches, a wireless charger, a 12.1-inch central display, adaptive cruise control with stop & go and lane centering, evasive steer assist, reverse brake assist, lane-keep assist with road-edge detection, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, rear cross-traffic alert, post-collision braking, and pre-collision assist.

The Wildtrak also sports an E-Shifter that provides a “short throw” between gears and enables the Active Park Assist 2.0 programme which automatically performs the gear selection, steering, acceleration, and braking during parallel and perpendicular parking.

Engines

One driveline is available in the Ranger single cabs, comprising a 2.0-litre, single-turbo (SiT) diesel motor generating 125kW and 405Nm, mated either to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The two-door bakkie is also available in rear-wheel drive, as well as with a shift-on-the-fly 4×4 system.

For the super cabs, the engine options grow to two comprising the aforementioned SiT as well as a reworked 2.0-litre, bi-turbo (BiT) diesel version putting out 154kW and 500Nm.

Once again, the XL is only offered with the SiT in six-speed manual or automatic, and rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.

The XLT, on the other hand, ships with both the SiT mated to a six-speed auto-box turning the rear wheels, or the BiT with a 10-speed automatic that drives all four tyres.

As for the Wildtrak, it only comes with the BiT, 10-speed transmission, and 4×4.

The entire range also has a locking rear differential as standard and can tow up to 3,500kg, while depending on the model, payload capacity sits between 964kg-1,186kg.
