The American basketball player is sentenced to 9 years in prison in Russia, Biden immediately reacts
A Russian court found American basketball player Brittney Griner guilty of drug smuggling. The court said she had deliberately brought cannabis oil into Russia.
The two-time Olympic champion was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Under Russian law, the maximum sentence for the charges against Griner is ten years in prison.
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, issued a statement shortly after the sentence was announced, saying that this case “is yet another reminder of what the world already knows: Russia is wrongfully holding Brittney.”
Meanwhile, during the final address before a Russian court earlier on August 4, the double Olympic champion said that she did not want to break the law and that her parents had taught her to take responsibility for her actions.
Griner has been in custody in Russia since authorities found cannabis oil in her suitcase as she passed through Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in February.
Cannabis is illegal in Russia and its use is also prohibited for medical purposes./Euronews/
