American congressmen letter to Biden: Do not sell F-16 to Erdogan, he is committing war crimes
35 members of the US Congress expressed their opposition to the possibility of selling F-16 to Turkey, in a letter addressed to President Joe Biden.
In the letter they sent to the American president, the 35 deputies say they will block any initiative to sell the F-16 to Turkey, stressing that Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ignored his country’s commitments as a NATO and US ally. prioritizing disruptive tactics. for personal gain and not for the collective good of his allies.
Dear President Biden,
We are deeply concerned about comments made on June 30 at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Madrid, Spain, regarding the potential sale of 70 F-16s and engineering services to Turkey.
Erdogan has consistently chosen to prioritize divisive tactics for personal gain over the collective good of his allies. His choice to block Finland and Sweden from joining NATO until he makes absurd and irrelevant concessions makes it clear that he has done very little to strengthen NATO’s strategic position since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sparked its worst crisis. the biggest challenge the alliance has faced for decades.
Erdogan’s use of alarmist tactics contrary to the common good of the NATO alliance should come as no surprise. His regime has consistently used its military might to destabilize the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, South Caucasus and North Africa for years.
Turkish forces have used US-made weapons and components during these raids to commit war crimes, including the deliberate bombing of civilian targets such as hospitals and schools in Iraq, Syria and Nagorno-Karabakh.
They have also been used repeatedly to violate the sovereign territory of NATO allies and partners such as Greece and Cyprus. These are not the actions of a committed ally of the United States and Europe.
Selling advanced US fighter jets to Turkey will not prompt Erdogan to suddenly become a good ally. More likely, these weapons will cause more casualties and further destruction in the region. Turkey also continues to use S-400 missile defense systems, which potentially reveal important tactical information about US military weapons and operations in Russia.
Moreover, Erdogan’s regime continues to promote unfair elections, suppress civil society and abuse human rights in his country to maintain power. With the Turkish economy in decline and Erdogan’s popularity declining, the news media directly controlled by his party will use any major arms sales as propaganda to support him, as they have already done with the concessions obtained at the NATO summit. s.
As your administration seeks to advance the sale of F-16s and upgrade kits to Turkey, please know that we will take every action available to us as members of Congress to prevent this from happening.
Precedent shows that Erdogan will not change his behavior if we continue to reward his efforts to undermine the NATO alliance. The United States should not provide further support to Turkey’s military until steps are taken to stop its destabilizing actions and violations of international law at home and abroad.
Thank you for your attention to these concerns and we look forward to your timely response./abcnews.al
